2008 Home Tour—featuring home-owner driven, alternatively built
residences, Monday, September 1 |
(from The Crestone Eagle's August issue)
The theme for this year’s Home Tour rests on the shoulders of the highly active and involved home-owner/builder: “the owner-built house.” Building a house with the intention of living in it is a different from how most homes are built. If a general contractor built the house many details could be overlooked. Yet the owner-built house has the advantage of comfortable functionality as well as the owner’s individual needs.
The Home Tour will consist of three routes, each with five homes. Tour A and Tour B will be featuring great homes throughout the Baca. Tour C will be a walking tour in the Town of Crestone. For Tours A and B, the meeting spot and carpooling depot will be the kiosk parking lot at the entrance to the Baca.
Some houses on the tour are still in some phase of construction, while others have had many years for the homeowner to work out all imperfections and design problems, and to learn to love the elements that worked well. While out on the Home Tour, you will be guided by an instructor, whose knowledge of the key elements in this alternative Home Tour will be shared. Yet more importantly, the homeowner(s) will be present to help share their perspective on how the building process went, as well as proudly emphasize what works for them in their abode.
Tour A
This tour will be led by Paul Shippee. The featured home will be Paul’s rammed earth/strawbale “SunEarth II” House, which models passive solar, rammed earth first floor walls, 2nd story strawbale, solar hot water, earthen plasters and earthen floors. This tour will also show a dynamic, octagonal 2-story strawbale building.
Tour B
Tour B’s instructor is Talmath Lakai, who will show Schuyler Fishman’s “Strawbale Palace” as the featured home. Passive solar off grid PV (photo voltaic) with solar hot water radiant heating, adobe floors, and earthen plasters. Fishman refers to her house as her palace, and building it was “ … very challenging, yet wouldn’t trade it for the world.” When you see this home on the tour, check out her stunning truth window. Additionally shown on this tour will be a beautifully built cordwood house still in the finishing stages of construction.
Plus, an under-construction, not plastered, under-roof, stacked strawbale.
Tour C
This tour will be led by Carmin Teeple, and is a walking tour around the town of Crestone. The featured home is Annie Pace’s “Strawbale Retreat” with yoga shala. It contains a grid-tied battery backup PV system, solar hot water with radiant heating, and adobe floors. Also, don’t miss the charming single-story strawbale, as well as the earthship/strawbale hybrid additionally being shown on this tour.
